This morning I have been out conducting speed reduction patrols and traffic monitoring around HGVs breaking weight limits in and around Heather.
Thankfully all drivers monitored were found to be driving in accordance with the speed limits and weight restrictions.
Just remember the risk to a pedestrian increases significantly as vehicle speed rises:
20 mph Around 90–95% survival is estimated in some studies, meaning the risk of fatal injury is relatively low.
30 mph The risk of death increases substantially, with estimates suggesting approximately 7–20% of pedestrians may be killed, depending on factors such as vehicle design and the age of the pedestrian. 35 mph The risk of fatal injury rises sharply compared with 30 mph, with estimates around 33–40%. 40 mph The risk becomes significantly higher, with estimates varying widely depending on the vehicle and circumstances.
50–65 mph At these speeds, the likelihood of a pedestrian suffering fatal injuries increases dramatically compared with lower urban speeds. These figures are estimates, not guarantees. Survival depends on many factors, including the vehicle involved, the pedestrian’s age, the point of impact, road conditions and the availability of emergency medical care.
But the message is simple:
The faster you travel, the greater the risk.
In areas where pedestrians are present, slow down, stay alert and be prepared to stop.
